American reinforcements rein-forcements have appeared in the British Brit-ish battle zone, says a dispatch from British headquarters in France to Reciter's Reci-ter's limited. Their presence in the fighting line, the correspondent adds, should soon be felL The battle which began yesterday morning between La Bassee and Fleurbaix, the correspondent says, Is continuing today with unabated violence. vio-lence. The artillery duel has extended southward to Arras, while the Ger-mans Ger-mans also are attacking between Armentieres Ar-mentieres and Messines, on the Belgian Bel-gian border. The enemy has brought into action a tremendous concentration of artillery and is throwing in his Infantry in dense masses. The Germans, the writer writ-er declares, plainly are making another effort to break through the British positions. po-sitions. Americans In Thick of Fighting. American troops will soon be in the thick of the fighting against the great German drive for a decision on the western front, according to the indications indi-cations in today's dispatches. They have appeared in the British battle zone where their presence is expected to be felt shortly, the advices state. Meanwhile the new German offensive In Flanders appears to be developing into more than a local operation. The fighting has spread to the north of Armentieres, Ar-mentieres, south of which it first broke out, and a drive is now on between Armentieres and Messines, behind which lies the famous ridge, the tak ing of which by the British in their terrific blasting operation of last year gave them their firm hold on the Flanders situation. The German effort in the Flanders' stroke is really of such magnitude as to constitute another attempt to break through the British lines in the opening open-ing of at least one of the close observers, obser-vers, at the front, the tremendous concentration con-centration of artillery and the throwing throw-ing in of dense masses of infantry denoting de-noting this purpose. oo |
