BANK j New York, Dec. 13 Two officers of i the East Brooklyn Savings bank wore killed late today by two daring high- i waymen who escaped in a laxlcab ( with $13,000 after shooting a detpc- ' tivc who tried to stop ihem and hold- ; ing a crowd at bay with their revol- vers. t The robbers chose the busiest lime , of the day. Entering as if to make i a deposit, one advanced to the pay ing teller's window and thrust a re- i volver through the bars, while his J companion covered other persons in j the bank. ' When Daniel C. Peal, teller, failed i to "come across" as ordered, lie was J shot through the heart. His slayer j then took his turn at "covering" the crowd, while the companion ran to the J window, forced a clerk to retreat to the rear of the cage and then crawled -through the small opening. From that cage he hastened to the one where the murdered teller lay. J He thrust rolls of bills Into a linen i bag and when Henry W. Coons, as- J slBtant treasurer of the bank, ran i forward he too was shot. He died later at a hospital. I Then both robbers made a dash for 1 the street and when Detective Albert j ' Doody tried to block their path, he' received a wound in the left arm.j Outside the pair waved the crowd ; back with their revolvers and entered a taxicab. Later the chauffeur, who said his 1 name was George W. McCullough, gave himself up to the police. He claimed he was not implicated in the robbery, but that he had had a pistol pressed , to his head and had been threatened J with death if he did not obey orders. nn |
