Show PLANE FALLS NORFOLK, Dec. 13 Two enlisted men were instantly killed and two ensigns en-signs injured today when a large hydro-airplane crashed into tho Wil-loughby Wil-loughby spit, about twelve miles from the city. The dead are Ttadio Expert Thomas Vincent Jones, U. S. N., and Machinist's Machin-ist's Mato Llwcllyn W. Alexander. Ensign Palmcdo who wns driving the machine was slightly Injured, and a second ensign, whose namo could not be learned escaped with minor injuries, in-juries, A wireless operator aboard the machine was uninjured. The hydro-alrplano was one of the largest in uso by the navy and was 'equipped with two powerful motors. The machine, with five aboard, left jBaltiraoro at ten o'clock this morning for a run to the Hampton Roads naval base and return. At he head of the bay the pilot lost his way in the dense fog and mist overhanging tho coast and was forced to land in order to obtain his location. The machino was successfully dropped Into water near the sccno of tho accident. Arising, tho machino was seen to emerge from tho fog almost immed-itely immed-itely crumpling, falling again Into the water. Jones and Alexander wero caught under tho motors and crushed to death. |
