Show oo OFFICERS FIGHT WITH DESERTERS HUNTINGTON, W. Va Aug. 22. Military reserves, United States deputy dep-uty marshals and posses from Mingo and Wayne counties this morning are searching for a band of army deserters and slackers in Mingo county. In a light with the dosorters lato yesterday John Dillon, a deputy sheriff, and William Ellis, a doputlzed civilian, were killed. The desertors last night sent to tho town of Breedon for medical aid. The runner was captured. Ho told the posse that the deserters comprised men from Camps Lee, Taylor nnd Shelby and a number of draft ovadors. An unidentified unidenti-fied member of the posse, he said, was killed yesterday. The leaders of the deserters this morning sent a mossage to Sheriff T. C. Blankcnshlp of Mingo county warning warn-ing him to draw off his posse and militiamen mili-tiamen as all of the deserters are arm. od with army rifles and will fight to the last man before surrendering. |
