Show CHINA JOINS IN THE CONDEMNATION. China has broken off diplomatic relations re-lations with Germany and the German ambassador at Peking has been handed hand-ed his passports. The news will not shock Berlin, because be-cause China is not a powerful force and does not rank high in world affairs, af-fairs, but this is one more protest I against German ruthlessness which helps to fix on the Teutons the crime of barbarous disregard of civilized warfare. China, too. is something more than a decaying nation. Of late years modern mod-ern industrialism has been gaining a foothold In the Celestial empire and on the Yangste large iron works have been erected, which are supplying Japan with steel used in the making of munitions and ordnance. The man-power of China is almost unlimited and lias been drawn on in a comparatively small way to make up for the scarcity of common labor in France. Tnder the speeding up of the allies, China might be made to greatly strengthen the forces fighting fight-ing the Central powers, although the war may be over before the Asiatic can be of much assistance. If the South American countries ana Scandinavia were now to join in protest, pro-test, Germany would sland condemned condemn-ed by the entire world, except her allies. This would be an opportune time for the Kaiser to quit, on the plea that Germany cannot hope to defeat the world. Overtures looking to the ending end-ing of the struggle would be made tomorrow to-morrow if the Kaiser could be assured of terms which would not demand the destruction of his power and the loading load-ing down of his empire with a crash' ing debt in the form of indemnities. oo |
