With the passing of the ex-prize fighter, fight-er, preacher, sociologist, humanitarian and host to Willie, was recalled the days when thousands of unfortunates were fed and sheltered by the humane hu-mane mission, at 22 Meridan street, which friends said he always operated oper-ated at a financial loss. "Moody, the noted evangelist, taught me to preach," Hogan once said, "and then 1 learned that there was more to serving mankind than be giving hungry men words. That is the reason rea-son I smarted the soup mission and the flop." In his youth Hogan was said to be reckless, contemptuous of the law, and gloring in his strength. He served i both the union and confederate armies in the civil war as a blockade! runner. Nearly half a century ago he fought Tom Allen for the world's championship and was beaten. oo |
