Show I'll ffl!E PALMER TO jf STAGE COME-BACK ' ' - ! Champion of Colored Race ' ' j and Jack Downey Star At- ' I jj traction at Salt Lake. H Salt Lake, Nov. 3. Manager Down- I ' Ing "will give the patrons of his Man- ifj hattan club boxing shows a big ' ' double-header for his next Monday d -i' night boxing show. He has matched S Eddie Palmer, recognized champion of i i the colored race, and Jack Downey, '' the local veteran, as one of the star ,j attractions and will send Bob Moore i and Swde Johnson over the six-round , ' route for the other. I" Palmer has boxed twice at the Man- . ! hattan club and has shown that he is ' !l one of the greatest boxers tha't has ' .1 every appeared in this city. Both i !l times ho apparently beat his oppo- i JJ nents without extending himself, but 1? ho brought, the wrath of Manager I -ft Downing down upon his head several H ' weeks ago because he did not stop I ' Dick Wells after hte had him in a con- jJ dltion where it looked to everyone present that he could do so. As a result re-sult he was told that his services would no longer be needed at this club. The colored boy convinced Manager Downing soon after the bout .that he hnd gone into the ring with his right hand practically useless from 'an Injury sustained a day before the contest. , Sinco that time Palmer has pleaded I for another chance in order to redeem himself with the fans, and has convinced con-vinced Manager Downing that he can bo depended upon to bo physically fit when ho steps into the ring. In matching Palmer with Downey, Promoter Downing has sent Palmer ngainBt the toughest proposition that could be found In this part o the country. Downy is not only one of the cleverest big fellows around here, but can hit with either hand. On top of that the local man is In the best condition that he has been in in years. He has been training conscientiously for the past four months and has taken off all superfluous flesh. Bob Moore and Swede Johnson, who had the fans standing on their seats last Monday night when they went four whirlwind rounds to a draw, have been rematcheel over the six-round route. One or the other should be able to gain a verdict, as It would be almost impossible for the two boys to go six rounds at the rate they went last Monday without one or the other gaining a decided advantage. Gus Williams of Cox's gymnasium, who made such a showing in his first bout a couple of weeks ago that he is looked upon as a real phenom, has been matched with Willie Gee, the clever Denver featherweight. Oscar Taylor, a former Manhattan ' club favorite, will meet "Smiling" Joe Pelcher of Ogden, one of the most popular boys that ever came over 'from the Junctiqn City, but who has not been seen at the Grand in more than a year. Even the first preliminary will be a real feature, as B. Christian, who won the amateur heavyweight championship cham-pionship of the state at the last amateur ama-teur tournament in this city, will meet big Dan Ketchel of New York. oo |
