Show I DRIVING AUSTRIA FROM THE ADRIATIC. Italian troops are reported to be within 13 miles of Trlest and the Austrian Aus-trian squadron is said to have departed. de-parted. Triest is near Austria's great naval port and arsenal. Tho loss of the city would almost eliminate Austria Aus-tria from tho Adriatic, as Pola, the other important naval base would be blocked with the fall of Triest. The Austrian warships might seek to escape from tho Adriatic by proceeding pro-ceeding to the Dardanelles, but the attempt would be attended with great danger, as tho allies have powerful naval forces in the , Mediterranean capable of Intercepting the fleeing vessels. With the Italians sweeping over the northern shores of the Adriatic, the central powers soon will have no base from which to operate submarine, except ex-cept from the Dardanelles. The iron ring Is being welded as the allies in the east, south and west continue to strike blows that make the sparks fly. oo- |
