Show MILLIONS FOR THEJORKERS Advance of Ten Per Cent in the Wages of the Employees. Em-ployees. New York, Nov. 21 The U. S. Steel corporation tonight announced an increase of 10 per cent in the wages of the employes of its steel and Iron companies, effective December 15 next. Wage and salary advances in other departments of the corporation also will be equitably adjusted, it was stated. The Increase effects in all about 200,0000 employees and probably prob-ably adds nearly $20,000,000 to the corporation's pay roll. "Ordinarily tho question of wages would not come up for consideration or decision at this time of tho year," said Chairman Elbert H. Gary, in making mak-ing the announcement, "but in consequence conse-quence of the abnormal conditions now existing, it has been decided to increase tho wage rales of our iron and steel companies about 10 per cent to take effect December 15, As to other departments, Increases will be equitably proportioned." Chairman Gary declined to make further comment, but another official of the corporation said the action of the directors was taken "with due regard re-gard for the higher prices prevailing for necessaries in all parts of the country." Total salaries and wages paid to the company's 191,126 employees In 1915 aggregated $164,S00,S64. Since that time the number of employees has greatly increased and several wage advances have been made. It is estimated the pay roll of the steel corporation at this time is between $190,000,000 and $200,000,000, which implies an increase of approximately $20,000,000 under tho higher rate of pay. The average wage or salary per employee em-ployee in 1915 was $2.92 a day, an increase in-crease of four cents daily over the previous year. |
