Show uu OLD CHIEF OF THE MOM HE Black Eagle, now nearly a hundred years old, one of the oldest chiefs of the Mohawk tribe of Indians, will bo seen in a forthcoming William Fox feature picture now being produced under the direction of James Vincent. Black Eagle has been a remarkable character all his life, not only during the time when he donned warpaint and led the members of his tribe against the white settlers, but after when he became a "good Indian." He acknowledged to having the scalps of eight of his victims, but not boastfully, boast-fully, as ho did once upon a time. His most cherished possessions now are two medals, one given him by General Grant lu 1876 when he was President of the United States, and another by Queen Victoria in 1885 in recognition of his being the best Indian actor to porform before her. Black Eaglo can read and write and is moreover a confirmed picture fan. He is tremendously interested in both the acting and producing of pictures, and never leaves what he calls the. 1 magic box only when he is actually . working or when the camera man K has taken it down after the day's IC work. Even then he is reluctant to j'. have It go out of his sight, fearful f j that some harm will happen that will III spoil the picture. II I That Black Eagle is temperamental II Is shown In the fact that when sign- III ing a contract with William Fox, he jlj insisted on a clause being inserted II whereby at all times, when he was at Jlj work, his acting would be accompan- jlj ied by Indian music sung to the meas- 11 1 ured beat of the tom-tom. In this he J displayed his business sagacity, aB he H created positions for his two children, jlj one of whom sings while the other III plays the Indian musical instrument. j oo 111 |
