Show oo ZEPPELIN RAIDS KILL AND WOUNO London, Feb. 2 Fifty-nine persons were killed and 101 wounded by bombs thrown from the Zeppelins which raided England on Monday night, according to an official statement state-ment in which it was alleged that bombs had been dropped on Liverpool, Birkenhead, Nottingham, Sheffield, Manchester and Great Yarmouth. The censor now permits the publication publi-cation of further details of tho raid, but so far no authentic statement from English sources has been made giving giv-ing the names of the town actually bombarded. Only the counties in which the towns are situated are permitted per-mitted to be mentioned. It is stated that the Germans wero deceived as to their actual whereabouts where-abouts and that they did not bombard the towns which they thought thoy were bombarding. as usual in tnese raids a remarkable remark-able proportion of the victims are women wo-men and children. Of the whole number num-ber killed 20 were women and six children. The women and children injured actually outnumbered the men. Story of Eyewitness. The following Is a description of the raid as -nitnessed by a correspondent to a certain Staffordshire town ' The first bomb was dropped near a moving picture hall, which was brilliantly illuminated. For a certain period the Zeppelin circled about tho town at the speed of an express ,traln. Many people rushed to tho streets, but there was no panic. "Both explosivo and incendiary bombs were dropped. Some time was lost before the neighborhood was darkened dar-kened Tho airship appeared to have no difficulty in dropping bombs in the vicinity of tho large buildings. "In a meeting house a mission for women was proceeding. A woman missionary was standing, Bible in hand, addressing 200 women ana girls when a bomb dropped within. 20 feet of tho mission room, which, was of wood. There was a blinding flash and then all was darkness. Missionary Killed. "The missionary was struck by a huge bomb and was killed. Another lady and a boy were killed. Screams of the injured were heard and many were trampled in the confusion. "A near-by church and the vicarage vere partly wrecked, bomb splinters boring holes In the solid masonry. "Some of the victims were killed as they hurried through the streets. A woman and her child lost their lives together Both the legs of another woman were blown off. "Much loss of life and damege to property occurred in a thickly populated popu-lated suburb, where about 30 bombs fell. Ten houses woro blown to pieces and many others damaged." oo |
