Show oo ARABS ARE TAKEN BY THE RUSSIANS Petrograd, via London, Jan. 19. 3:15 a m Correspondents with the Russian Rus-sian army in the Caucasus send to their newspapers stories of the terrible terri-ble plight of the retreating Turks after af-ter the defeat of the Turkish Eleventh Elev-enth corps in the Kara-Urgan region. They recount that large numbers of prisoners were taken through the capture of the victualing transport, which left the regiments concerned no alternative but starvation or surrender sur-render The correspondents sav the condition condi-tion of the prisoners reveals demoralization demorali-zation in the Turkish forces The soldiers were hungry and their cloth- - f Ing was tattered. Many were without with-out uniforms, but all appeared to be equipped with modern weapons Larue numbers were Arabs and, although they were better clothed than the Turks, they suffered terribly in the Intense cold and snow The rear guards which attempted to cover the Turkish retreat on Er-zerum, Er-zerum, according to the correspond ents, have been virtually destroyed. The few disorganized remnants of the array are said to bo fleeing In the direction of Erzerum, flinging their artillery' and stores over precipices or bnrying them under the snow. Amid the snowstorms which oblif- J crated every featuro of the roads, the Russians are reported to have pressed press-ed relentlessly upon their beaten foes. In one stretch of woods the Russians found the bodies of 9000 Turks who had frozen to death. They still grasped their rifles. The correspondents say It seems doubtful whether any of the fugitives will succeed in reaching Erzerum. It is rumored that the Turks, despairing of holding that fortress, are removing new German artillery recently mounted mount-ed there oo |
