Show ' OGDEN MAY BE : IN COAST LEAGUE If Portland Is Dropped Sacramento Sacra-mento and Ogden Are Possible Pos-sible Candidates for Franchise. San Francisco, Nov. 15 Ogden or Sacramento may be found In the circuit cir-cuit -n-hen the Coast league opens its season in 1916. While the magnates did not discuss the possibility of a new club in the running next year In closing their annual meeting today, to-day, thev did vote 5 to 1 to drop Portland Port-land unless satisfactory arrangements could be made with the railroad companies com-panies in the way or securing new The decision, relative to the reorganization reor-ganization of the circuit will be left until a later date, when the railroad officials meet with the Coast leaguo committee handling the business. The matter of dropping Portland has been debated back and forth for some time and all the directors were of the opinion opin-ion that something would have to be done. The attendance at Portland last year fell off to an alarming degree de-gree and the expense of transporting the ball players to the northwest reached such a figure that some action ac-tion was necessary. Judge W. W. cCredle naturally voted to save his franchise, but the other directors favored fa-vored taking in a new city unless a different arrangement than last season sea-son c&uld be secured. Ogden Well Located. If Portland is dropped as is considered con-sidered possible, Sacramento and Ogden Og-den present themseves as possible candidates for the franchise. They are located more conveniently than Portland, and will likely secure back-Insr back-Insr tn nmk thfiir fisrht. Oirden Is only an hour or so ride from Salt Lake, and not a great deal more expense ex-pense would be required. The only possible argument about taking in Ogden would be the matter mat-ter of climate, but Salt Lake proved that games can bo played in Utah in the early spring and late fall. Sacramento Sac-ramento would fit In the circuit nicely nice-ly and perhaps the lack of baseball for a year would stir the Capital City fans to action. It is up tq the railroads rail-roads now whether or not Portland will be in the circuit next year. To Meet In Salt Lake. Regarding expanding to eight club3 as proposed on several occasions, the directors did not even take up the subject, but were satisfied to straighten straight-en out the present difficulties. Salt Lake was decided on as the scene of next fall's annual meeting of the Pacific Coast league. It is a compliment that is coming to the baby member of the organization that I made such a good showing in its first year in the circuit It was also determined de-termined to eliminate Salt Lake from making guarantees of $2000 per week to the visiting clubs, as the team proved prov-ed that its followers will support the team. The matter of adopting a schedule for 1916 was put over until a meeting meet-ing to be called by President A. r. Baum after the first of the year. The directors will etudy jvor mapping out the series and return here with some data. There was a long session int the morning when such details as the best way of enforcing salary and player limits and tho like were gone over. |
