Show HI A LITTLE RETALIATION. H it m j A few shells thrown in to the hordes of Mexicans who are send- H m ing stray bullets across the American line, might do good, says the Hl Helena Independent. Kl "In the first daj' s fighting at the border, two Americans were B shot," says the Montana paper. "One was a waiter who was prob- Hjl ably a spectator of the fighting. He was hit by a straj' bullet; the HQ other was an American corporal who was shot by a Carranza soldier, Hi rwho leaped out of a trench and fired point blank at him. The incidents are not surprising, for it must inevitably happen that stray lead as well as lead purposely directed, is bound to come across the boundary line, especially when only a few feet separate the trenches of the neutral nation and the belligerents. It is stated that when tho American commander warned the Mexicans to quit firing into the town this side of the line, the order was obeyed, but it was not for long. Consequently the war department has issued orders to General Gen-eral Funston to open fire on either faction if they persist in firing across the border. A good shelling would do much to clear the situation. sit-uation. There is no sense or reason for the Mexicans to pick the border line as the only placo to stage a fight. The purpose, however, how-ever, is pretty clear. They arc playing it safe in the matter of provisions. pro-visions. t "We are foolish enough as a nation to return good for -evil by feeding a gang of Migrates who cause damage to American property prop-erty and frequently are responsible for deaths. "The order to shell them away from the border will meet the approval of the country. Thoy should have boon driven away long ago. And as for feeding the outfit, no matter which faction comes over for free board, it should be stopped right away. Feeding up an army until it is fat and saucy, so that it may hurry across the line and turn its guns on its benefactors, may be according to the teachings teach-ings of sentimentalists, but it is impractical and is only a deliberate method of committing suicide. |
