Show U.S. STEEL TO j HOLD 1UP WAGES; New York, Dec. 22 Ther will be no general reduction in wages by the United States Steel corporation at the present time, according to an announcement an-nouncement made today by Judge Elbert El-bert H. Gary, chairman of the corporation corpo-ration after a meeting of the corporation's corpo-ration's finance committee. There will. however, be some readjustments readjust-ments in the pay of 'skilled labor and piece work'' on a lower basis. Judge Gary issued the following I statement : "After giving careful consideration to the subject it has been decided to make, no general reduction in the wages wa-ges of employes of the United States Steel corporation at this time. There will probably be some readjustments m the amounts paid for skilled labor or piece work, depending upon special conditions "In view of the general depression in business which has been experienced experi-enced for some time, decreases In the general wage scale have seemed i inevitable and imminent, but it has been determined to continue the existing ex-isting scale for the present at least with the hope that the improvement in business will be realized Already there are some evidences of a change tor the better." rvr |
