Show SERMON ON THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT i Rev. J. E. Carvpr of the Presbyteri- an church, in his sermon Sunday night, said How many needy people would there be in Ogden If spiritual, menta! and affectional poverty and want were as openly recognized as is the mark of bodily need? And yet all have minds, souls and hearts. Few, however, give to any but the bodily desires And yet the mind, heart and soul trends are eternal. There were many children by the name of Jesus In Palestine Josephus tolls us it was a common name in the time of Christ We find It in the Old Testament as Joshua. Oshea and Tohoshua But Jesus was named Jesus Je-sus because be should do all the name implied, that is. save the people. Salvation is health, wholeness holi ness. We may fail in business and in health. We need not fail In morality. mo-rality. To inak money, to win titles ti-tles of honor, to load political armies, and yet not know the next man as brother is to fall. Don't be so self-centered that you forget that life is many sided All have minds bodies, souls and hearts, but most Christmas gifts arc given to (the body When we read of Christmas and that Jesus came to save the world k from its sins, we know that to many that is a seemingly little thing, not nearly to be compared with the great achievements of the world great. This Is so because to save from sin is so preat n task that few have even dreamed It Sahation Is the only real success. "Men are called su -I cessful who in one or two sections succeed." says Babcock, What if three air-tight compartments keep dr f when the bulkheads break and the ship ssnks? Salvation is to be right ail around Few ever remember the eouI at all More remember the heart, Gtill more give intellectual gifts. But the first Christmas gift of the Christ i was a gift to the sduI of man, a gift i to hir. spiritual need. Mow many be?e:irs would there be in Ogden if spiritual and mental want v re as discernible as is bodily want0 There have ben two memorable times when the angels of heaven Joined with the sons of men in praise to Cod When the structure of the earth was completed, thf morning stars sang together and all the sons pf Hod shouted for joy. When Christ it as born the multitude of the heavenly heaven-ly host praised God and said: "Glory ! (o iod in the highest and on earth oace, good will to men " We read that when the earth is completely, redeemed, re-deemed, the angels of Clod will again sing with all redeemed creation in praise to God Note a manifestation of God's good will to mpn as shown in the way in which ho deals with us. lie does nol save us, but he gives us a saioi that we may have our part. Ho docs not strengthen us but he gives us a strengthfner that we may grow strong. He does not bestow truth and knowledge on us, but he gives us the objects of truth and wisdom and the ability to acquire knowledge We have our full part to do. God does not dwarf or impoverish us in bis blessings and gifts Man on the contrary con-trary often injures those he tries to help. He gives to the beggar the fruit of labor instead of the labor. He gives to the needy in such a waj th.it tin , i ontinue to bo needy. Our charities char-ities do not develop any new pow i r in those whom we seek to help. Our good will satisfies the needy for today to-day God's good will is an ever grow ing hlessing Good will Is no common trend. It Is one of the very highest manifestations manifesta-tions ot charattor. It always costs very' much to have genuine good will towards anyone It is often above love or friendship, for peoplo have ruined ru-ined thoir fronds and despoiled the ones they have loved. We do not wonder then that God s good will cost him the death of his own son on the cross in order to make that good will complete |
