Show OEM HUSH OF MAIL BIOS TRAFFIC MAN TO OGDEN Guy Adams, superintendent of mail traffic for the I'nion Pacific, with headquarters at Omaha, came to Ogden Og-den last night on train No 0 and remained re-mained here until noon today, Hi-trip Hi-trip here was for 1 he purpose of looking look-ing Into conditions at the local transfer trans-fer station with a view to bettering the present system of handling th mails, as far as the railroad's part of the work is concerned. He went to Salt Lake from here and expects to return about January 1. According to Depot Master John Shields, more than three times as much mail has been handled at Og den this war than In any previous year and the transferring at the depot has delayed even train on which mall is carried from 25 minutes to one hour and forty minutes. from one to six cars of mail has been transferred from every passenger train Two special mail trains gone out from the city The first special was sent out as the second section of No. 6 westbound yesterday. It comprised 10 cars of mail The second sec-ond was the second section of No. ti this morning and comprised nine cars. No 20 east bound toda. had two extra mail cars. No G eastbound bad 15 cars today, including six of mail. The latter train was pulled by two engines. Chief Clerk W V. Bangasser of the railway mail service corroborated corrobora-ted lr Shields' statement concerning concern-ing the volume of mail handled and substantiated it by saying that last Saturday nearly twice as much mail was handled at the depot as was handled han-dled during the entire week ending with the same date last year The volume of local mail, he said, Is much larger than that received here last year, but the principal reason for the extraordinary congestion at the ter- j minal is that nearly all of the Califor j nifl mall has been diverted at Ogden to be worked up. instead of sending it 0:1 j to Sacramento, as v. as done last year. Two more clerks were added at the terminal today and the Chief Clerk believes be-lieves that the force as it now stands is sufficiently large to take care of the mail during the remainder of the rush season. Two clerks and another parcel post j wagon were added to the force at the postoifice and the mails this morning were well In hand At the uptown sub-stations and also at the two stamp windows in the postofflce, the sale of stamps has been strong and two wag on loads of parcels were taken from one of them to the postofflce yesterday. |
