Reports from various parts of Austria-Hungary indicate that Eritlsh prisoners of war have been subjected subject-ed In many Instances to harsh treat inent. They have been insufficiently fed and badly housed amid insanitary conditions. Many prisoners have been transferred transfer-red to various points In the interior At first they wove made comfortable, and those with racvey were permitted to buy all the extra comforts procurable, procur-able, but later all prisoners were treated alike. A batch of these prisoner engaged for a time in building boats for the Austrian navy at the Monfalcone dock yards, near Trieste, recently has been transferred to a fortress in Hungary- The American consul at Trieste is endeavoring to alleviate the unhappy condition of the prisoners. |
