Show CHARGES AGAINST PATROLMEN HEARD Idaho Falls, Ida., Nov 14 There vns Intense public Interest tn an Investigation of Chief of Police J I Hayball and Officers Sidney Whr bead, Theodore Jackson and A .M Bd wards which was conducted here ast night by Mavor Clark and seven of the eight city councilmen. Announcement having been made last Friday night that such an Invea ligation would be held the council -haniher last night was crowded with interested citizens. Additional notoriety noto-riety had been given to the ca9e by reason of the fact that such serioiio harges would be brought forward ia might Imperil the positions of the officers named At the council meeting of a week iico last night the mavor had made the statement thai nn account of re ports which had come to him he had previously naked for the resignations of Officer Edwards and Jackson, but that they had refused to relinquish their positions while under fire. Last night Councilman Lachapelle who is a member of the police com mlttee. acted as inquisitor Before the proceedings had gone very far, Officer Edwards became the center of fire, and at their com luslon the seven counollmeo unanimously voted thai Edwards be discharged from the police force. The mayor having the final vcoce in the matter, he an nounced that he would take it under advisement with the police commit tee. to annoume his decision later Edwards, therefore, returned to his duty. In course of the examination, conducted con-ducted by Councilman Lachapelle. Officer Of-ficer Edwards denied being a frequent er of rooming houses and the restricted restrict-ed districts, or that he had collected dog lax from farmers entering town, or engaged in any of the other sorts of alleged graft charged. He finallj admitted, however that one night re cently he shot four bullet holes through the floor of police headquarters headquar-ters in an effort to hit a fly on a chair rung The charges made against Officer Edwards, In addition to those already mentioned, include intoxication on duty, being frequently absent from his post and even being in another town while he should have been un dutv All of the charges he strenu ously denied until he finally admitted the shooting at police heidquarf era Ev-ery other charge he maintained was false Councilman Coughim was foremost In attributing negligence to the chief of police, in that he had permitted dereliction of duty on the party of any officer. oo |
