Show CHIEF DF POLICE 6IVEN A SURPRISE Chief of Police W. I. Norton was one of the most surprised men in the city yesterday fhen, at the close of the lengthy speech by Judge William H Reeder, he was presented with a gold signet ring. The presentation was made about 3:15 p.m. yesterday in the presence of tht majority of the members of the department and was the gift of the men who serve under the Chief. The speech of Judge Reeder was preceded by a few remarks from Detective De-tective Richard Pincock, who stated that tho officers had desired to meet with the chief to thresh out a very serious matter that had come up between be-tween them. The judge said that it wasn't his business to enter into police affairs but that something had come to him that the Chief should know. He spoke along this line for nearly fifteen minutes, with the officers almost bursting with suppressed laughter and the Chief In a highly nervous condition. At the conclusion of his talk, he gave the ring to Mr. Norton, with the best wishes of all his associates asso-ciates In the department. Chief Norton, In accepting tho gift, expressed appreciation of the token with an appropriate speech, also wishing wish-ing his fellow officers a happy new vear. |
