Show oo AN INDUSTRY OF GROWTH A compiled statement of the canned fruit and vegetable pack of California proves that, by comparison, compari-son, the Ogden canning district is a most Important factor in the canned goods industry of the west, Iast year California put up 4,800 000 cases of fruits, of which apricots, peaches and pears male up nearly 75 per cent Two million and a half cases of vegetables were packed, of which over 50 per cent was tomatoes, and 30 per cent asparagus. When the canning of fruits and vegetables was an experiment in Ogden. Og-den. the industry was an old established estab-lished one in California. Still the local lo-cal canners are now able to make a fairly creditable comparison For instance, last year, there were canned in the Ogden district 610,000 cases of tomatoes; the total number of cases of fruits and vegetables was close to one million, There were 23,000,000 cans used by -the local factories. With a widening market, made possible pos-sible by the reduction of freights allowing al-lowing the Ogden tomato to reach the Missouri river territory and go south into Texas, there should be a larger output of the canned product this year than heretofore and eventually a very much greater pack. The canning industry has become one of the most substantial interests of this part of Utah, around which other big industries are beginning to be established. |
