S Darrow, former chiei counsel fori the MeNamara brothers, crots-examined Bert Franklin today and obtain-, ed an admission that Franklin, his quondam "chief investigator'' In the 1 dvnamiie trial, had procured Immunity Immuni-ty for testifying against him. Franklin admitted he had pleaded guilty to having bribed Robert Bain, the MeNamara juror, for the corruption corrup-tion of whom Darrow Is now on trial, and that he had been "exempted" from prosecution for testifying against Darrow in the case charging corrup-, tion of George N. Lockwood. anoth- ; er prospective juryman. Darrow was tried several month ago on the charge of bribing Lock-wood Lock-wood and was acquitted Franklin declared his immunity was a "matter of opinion." but at length nccepted the stipulation made by District Dis-trict Attorney Joseph Ford that he had obtained Immunity. The Immunity Immuni-ty feature was credited with having exercised great lnflue'nce with the jury which acquitted Durrow in the first trial. |
