FROM SLAVE TO TYRANT those who believe that the new russian regime is an expression ot all those liberal opinions that have become matters 0 instinct and habit tor he rest 0 civilization would do well to note that a jewish delegate to the who presented himself as the representative 0 the jewish population of ellna was promptly refused admission not because of any irregularity real or pretended but simply and solely because he was a jew almost the first act of those from whom the fetters have been struck is to rivet those fetters upon another it Is a glaring and a disheartening commentary not only upon the methods and the wisdom of the revolutionists tout upon the stupidities of human nature it is indeed rare to find constructive governmental ability on the part of revolutionists revolution is essentially destructive and indiscriminating and although it may sometimes be a stern and even a righteous necessity the subsequent work ot building up has nearly always been done by those who had but little share in the tearing down for ages the russian people have buffered from the lack of political representation and political freedom their goal seems now to ts in sight for the first time in the history of the nation and one of their earliest acts of emancipation is a deliberate denial of the principles that they profess to have eo much at heart so easy is the transition from the slave to the tyrant it would perhaps be harsh to say that the loud protestations oc the are a mere pretense and that their conception of liberty Is merely a liberty to persecute such however will be the judgment of the world it it should transpire that the various sections of freed russia are mutually determined to perpetuate the slavery of the others the jew is a russian subject and a jewish delegate representing a jewish community Is peculiarly well fitted for the and peculiarly valuable therein many such action as this would go far to justify the russian autocracy in their contention that the slav proletariat is apt fit for self government not fit indeed tor anything but to obey the orders of his taskmaster
