Show COAL MINERS MAY DEMAND 8 HOUR DAY shamokin Sha pa sept is president john of the united mino workers of america announced today that tho convention of mine workers t three anthracite districts at which demands would be formulated to be presented to the anthracite coal companies next spring will be held here on december 14 the mine workers ot the three districts will shortly elect delegates to represent them at the meeting the decision to hold a convention to formulate demands Is similar to the action taken before the great strike ot 1902 when a convention was held here to demand increases the award of the anthracite coal committee will expire march 31 next year president mitchall has been in tho anthracite coal region for the past two months holding meetings every day for the purpose of strengthening the union after the 1902 strike there was a considerable falling off in membership As a result of the campaign abo miners leader is waging many of those aho vho dropped out of the union are returning among the demands that the union will probably formulate are aja eight hour day for all classes of mine workers recognition of the union and a yearly agreement with the coal companies similar to the one existing in some of the bituminous coal fields of the middle west |
