Show WILL SIGN CANAL BILL President Taft Says He Expects to Approve Panama Measure Washington, Aug. 10. President Ti.ft told several callerB today that ho expected to sign the Panama canal bl'1 passed by the Benate yesterday, carrying provisions against the uso of'the canal by railroad owned ships and granting free tolls to American vessels. The preBident Is declared to have declared that Borne of the provision pro-vision of the measure did not meet with hie views entirely but that he expected to approve it. Railroad and legal experts in congress con-gress hold the view that the senate had authorized a highly Important extension of the power of the Interstate Inter-state Commerce commission in adopting the Bourne amendment to Panama canal bill. The provision would authorize the commission to divorce competing railroads and steamship lines wherever wher-ever they were found to operate to the detriment of the public and would extend powers of regulation over water routes. Such control has long been desired by the commission, but the water lines have never conceded the right of the commission to supervise their business or their relations with the railroads. Little difficulty Is expected expect-ed In reconciling the differences between be-tween the senate and house on the bill. |
