Show BRUTALITY IN A STATE SCHOOL SL Anthony, Ida., Aug. 10. Sickening Sicken-ing stories of cruolty alleged to have been practiced on tho Inmates of tho state industrial school here havo been told to the governor and state board in the course of the investigation this week. Charles Portrldgo, now or age and living with his wlfo and baby at Shelley, Shel-ley, was one of the witnesses. He had escaped from the school wneu about 16 years of age after two unsuccessful unsuc-cessful breaks for liberty. He testified testi-fied that he had been lashed so brutally bru-tally that the bruises wero visible five months afterward. Portrldgo told of three girls who ran awa and wero caught while he was an Inmate of the school. One ol them was named Wilson. Sho did not resume hor place In the dining Toom. It was whispered about the Institution that she had been beaten and taken to the honpltal. Helped Dig Girl's Grave. Then lie helped dig a grave for her Portrldgo said. The Inmates were told that sho died from typhoid fever. fe-ver. A farmer, Alien, living near St. Anthony, An-thony, told of harboring three boys, aged lo, 14 nml 9, who came from the school Their backs were black an t blue, he said, nnd covered with ugly scars. He added that he had some difficulty In examining the 14-year-old boy because his shirt Btuck to his lacerated flesh. Tho weapons with which these alleged al-leged beatings wero said to have been inflicted wero shown to the board. They were slabs of leather provided 1L with handles.
