Show HOUSE ABOLISHES THE TARIFF BOARD Washington, June 4. The house yesterday passed two bills relating to steamship companies, one closing American port3 to foreign vessels whose owners violate the Sherman anti-trust law and the other providing provid-ing that all steamers plying the ocean and the great lakes and carrying more than fifty persons, passengers and crew, shall bo equipped with The latter measure applies to ocean- going vessels after October 1, 1912: to vessels on tho great lakes after April 1, 1913, and to ocean-going cargo steamers after July 1, 1913. The bill requires that ships subject to tho bill shall have apparatus capable of sending messages for 100 mile3 and that an operator must be constantly on duty, each vessel having two or more operators. The sundry civil bill was reported to the house from the appropriations committee. It carries $109,575,114. The measure abolishes the tariff board, makes sweeping reductions in the operating expenses of various governmental institutions covered by i tho bill and Is In line with the Democratic Demo-cratic economy program The president's presi-dent's economy and efficiency commission com-mission is continued In the bill. |
