Show OREGON SHORT LINE'S NEW POLICY. The "get acquainted" excursions of the officials of the Oregon Ore-gon Short Line are now a recognized annual event. The heads of departments, including the assistant general manager of tho road, close their desks at headquarters and get out among their patrons. Whoever originated these annual trips made a big step forward in bringing the railroad and business men together in better under standing of each other. Wo are told that William Sproule, president of the Southern Pacific, has started something similar on" the Southern Pacific The head of that road has set the example of getting close to the business communities by going out himself and meeting with the shippers, and he has issued an order to all division superintendents to erase the word private from their cars in order that the public may come to know that the cars of superintendents are open to them and their grievances. From Sproule down to the most obscure workman on the Southern Pacific, the watchword is: "Got acquainted with our customers and prospective customers and give them to know that the Southern Pacific is no longer playing play-ing politics, or fleecing the public in any manner, but is a great business concern laboring to oxtend to patrons fair treatment and exacting in return only a reasonable profit on its investments." Last year when the Oregon Short Line officials made their first swing around the circle, there was a little clash and some of the local business men aired their grievances without any attempt to conceal their disappointment over the treatment Ogden was receiving. re-ceiving. Since then a better feeling has been engendered, sor that last evening, after the visitors discovered they were in the house of their friends where there was no danger of being impaled on pitchforks and grilled for the amusement of those present, the broke into song and were joined by the best vocalists of the club. |
