Samuel Gom-pers, Gom-pers, head ot the American Federation Federa-tion of labor, sent the money direct to Clarence S. Darrow which Franklin Frank-lin has testified was used in the bribery brib-ery of Georgo N. Lockwood, according accord-ing to Bert Franklin, under cross-examination In tho trial of Darrow for alleged JuT bribery in connection with the MoNamara cases. Harrlman, Darrow told tho witness, could account for his visit to tho safe deposit vault tho morning ho secured the $4,000 by tho fact that he took out $600 to pay a mortgage, said Franklin. Questioned as to conversations following fol-lowing his arrest with Attorney Le-Compte Le-Compte Davis, Franklin claimed the privilege of declining to arrest on tho ground that Davis was his attorney. Ho declared that he did not intend to draw Davis Into the case. Chief Counsel Rogers for tho defense claimed claim-ed that Franklin waived all privileges when ho took the stand for the prosecution. prose-cution. Judge Hutton ruled that Franklin was not privileged to wlth-any wlth-any conversations with his attorney Franklin then told of conversations with Davis concerning the lattcr's efforts ef-forts to procure his release upon payment pay-ment of a fine. "Did you ever toll Mr. Davis that Mr. Lockwood hnd solicited a bribe of you and that you wanted to catch him?" asked Rogers. "Yes, I think It was In the office of Mr Gage," was the reply. "I told Mr. Davis that Lockwood camo to my office and solicited a bribe." Franklin said he had made this statement to Davis after the latter had aranged for his plea of guilty. Rogers drew from the witness the statement that Davis had told him to say that tho monov vised In bribing Lockwood had been sent to him from Chicago.
