McGregor, 2909 Washington avenue, ' was torn away from her three babies, dragged down tho street, and finally dumped into an automobile and taken to the police station, by Special Officer Offi-cer Moroni Brown and his son Ora Brown, 2920 Hudson avenue. It 13 said that the woman was taken from her home and subjected to humiliating humiliat-ing treatment at tho hands of the two men bocauso she rcmoxed a shingle from a water dam, that had boen constructed In the street by Mr. Brown, In ordor to keep the water from backing up, destroying her lawn and flowers, and running into the collar col-lar Moroni Brown, who was sworn In as a special officer some time ago, attempted at-tempted to take tho woman to the police station shortlv after 9 o'clock in the evening. She resisted and said that she would go, but that she wanted to first find someone to stay with her children. She was not allowed al-lowed to do so, however, and Mr. Brown and his grown-up son seized her by the wri6ts and started to tako her to tho station. According to witnesses, tho woman, after being jerked along for a distance, dis-tance, would have walked to the station sta-tion voluntarily, but, It is alleged, she was not allowed to do so, and was "taken" to thc station by Mr. Brown and bis son. Evoryono along thc strcot heard the woman's cries, and many neighbors crowded into the street and attompted to Jalk tho two men out of handling the woman in such a humiliating manner, but they wero not to be dls-Buadcd dls-Buadcd from the task they had undertaken, un-dertaken, so the neighbors wore forced to stand aside because of tho fact that Moroni Brown declared himself him-self to be a special officer I E. Emmctt, who witnessed tho Indiscretion Indiscre-tion of tho men, says "It was tho most outrageous thing I ever saw, and I was ncer so mad beforo In my whole life Mrs. Mc-1 Mc-1 Grogor's sleeves wero rolled up above her elbows, and those two men seized , her by her slender arms and literally literal-ly dragged her along I say dragged because she leaned back so far that her feet at times slid along thc pavo-; pavo-; ment as thoy pulled on her arms to make progress toward the police sta- Uon." After the two men had taken Mrs. McGregor about a block. Mr. Emmctt and Joseph Ballantync tried to reason with tho officer and his son for tho purpose of getting them to allow her to voluntarily walk down to tho sta- tlon. When reasoning failed to got i results, Emmett rushed to tho po-: po-: llco station and protested against tho " treatmout that was being henped upon up-on tho woman. Detectives Burk and Chambers set out to investigate tho case, and in tho meantime an auto-mobllist auto-mobllist who was passing along Wash-ington Wash-ington avenue persuaded tho men to let Mrs. McGregor get Into the machine ma-chine and go to the station. The trio got Into tho car and wero whisked to tho office of tho desk sergeant, where Brown stated that tho woman had broken his dam. In nnswer to the sergeant's query as to what ho wanted done with tho woman, Mr. Brown Is quoted as having said: "Well, 1'vo brought her hero; you can do what you want with her." He afterward said. It Is alleged: "I'll come down In the morning." Implying that he would appear in the morning to file charges against the woman. But today no chargo was filed by Mr. Brown. Mrs. McGregor, after spending spend-ing some minutes at the station, was i,v-wmne in.jlifl.Ramo machine that 'p'frora rUjR taken all tho live, and Mr. Brown recently built a little dam In the street to divert thc water In tho ditch. It is claimed that tho water had been backing up on the McGregor yard, and that Mr. McGregor Mc-Gregor took th3 top nhlngle off tho dam Friday night to avoid hlc lawn being further damaged by water. Mr. Brown replaced tho shingle, and shortly afterward Mrs. McGregor took the shingle down again, and at that Mr. Brown and hl3 son took her to the polico station. Today Mr. McGregor appeared before be-fore John Ileywood, the assistant city attorney, and swore out a warrant for thc arrest of both Moroni and Ora Brown, charging them with assault and disturbing tho peace, Tho warrant war-rant was placed In tho hands of officers offi-cers who woro ordered to serve it at once. The case will probably be heard in police court Monday morning. morn-ing. I is not altogether unlikely that Mr." McGregor will later file other charges against Mr. Brown, alleging that ho has been maintaining a nuisance. company, and J J O'Connor of tho Saltalr Improvement company. rl The course begins at North Temple t and Main streets and leads directly ' west to tho city limits. From there It goes ono mHo north and nine mile3 j? west, thence ono mllo south and terminates ter-minates at the beach. The Saltalr beach end of the project Is completed complet-ed with the exception of the building of the platform for tho parking of tho ,' machines, which is now under way. . nn t |
