Abe Lincoln is dead and nearly all the men who gave to us that grand party as constituted when, in all its purity and power, it made possible the freeing of the slaves and the holding in the Union all the states of this glorious country of ours. "When Lincoln died and countlesq thousands of other noble-minded men who wore the soul of the Republican party, and when their places were usurped by the agents of debauchery and the representatives of special privilege, the party faced a crisis which finally culminated in the conflict in the Chicago convention, ending in the protest of those Avhose greatest regret is that the party once so pure has become so corrupted. The Republican party, because of the verjT virtues which ave it strength in its earlier triumphs, because the prey of scheming rascals who of late years have controlled its leadership and dictated its policies pol-icies in the secret chambers of men such as Barnes of New York, Pun-rose Pun-rose of Pennsylvania and Crane of fassachusctts. "Without eternal vigilance the same influences, wc presume, will work the destruction of any other party which may gain the confidence confi-dence of the people. |
