SteveuB died a martyr in protecting protect-ing the honor of his daughters when they were about to bo attacked by two Mexican rebel camp followers near the Stevens home In Colonla Pacheco, Chihuahua, AugusL 2G. Junius Ju-nius Romney, president of the Mormon Mor-mon colonies In Mexico, returning today from Chihuahua, where ho ha3 been making an investigation of tho condition of affairs, especially the killing of Stevens. Mr. Romney brought the first details account of the killing of tho colonist. "Tho facts as we have been able to establish them," President Romney Rom-ney said tonight, "are that Stevens went to the rescue of his two daughters daugh-ters from the apparent criminal attack at-tack of two unknown .Mexicans who had followed the girls for some distance dis-tance before Stevens arrived from tho field. Tho daughters, Emma and Blla, -were picking blackberries about t'00 yards from the house vhon they saw tho two Mexicans approaching. The Mexicans succeeded in getting betweenthe two girls and the Slovene Slov-ene home. The girls ran toward the house by a circuitous route with the Mexicans following them. When thev approached where Mrs. Stevens and another daughter were picking berries ber-ries also tho latter ran to the house. The daughter to get the pistol which she supposed was there and the mother to -warn Mr. Stevens in the icld. Stabbed by Mexican. "Stevens ran to the house, took a double-barreled shotgun and started toward where tho Mexicans were. Ono Mexican drew a long knife and tho girls saw him strike their father. Tho two older girls, May and Ella, ran toward him and as they ran they heard two shots from their father's Bhotgun and saw one Mexican run to tho woods with his hands to his breast. Ho was later found dead with a hole in his right breast In tho same placo that tho other Mexican had stabbed Stevens. Just as he was about to be stabbed again Emma beat the Mexican in the faco with an oak club, forcing him off hpr father n3 ho fainted from loss of blood. The Mexican then hiado a. rush at Emma with his knife, but his arm was caught by the othor sister. Tho Mexican Mex-ican then ran with the older daughter following him with the shotgun He succeeded In escaping Mrs. Stevens Stev-ens and family are expected to reach El Paso this week from Colonla Juarez. They will go to Fillmore, Utah, to make their home.' President Romney Ga.vs that he does not consider conditions sufficiently suffi-ciently settled In the Chlhauhua colo. nlcs for tho women and their children chil-dren to return, and not safe enough In the mountain colonies for cither men or women to go back Crops .May Be UBt. "Tho federals are in control of the Northwestern railroad," he says, "but the rebels are scattered through the mountains In small bands. There were sixty at Chulchupa. Others were in the Hop valley, three miles from Pacheco, and they had been passing back and forth through the mountain cdlonios. They have .looted Pacheco and Garola thoroughly. There are $100,000 (Mexican (Mexi-can currency) worth of crops in these mountain colonies which could be partially par-tially saved If they could he harvested, but that Is impossible as conditions are at present There is 40.000 worth of oats ripening there now and no one to harvest It. Cattle havo been shot on the range In the mountain colonies wantonly. At Colonla Juarcr. and Dub-Ian Dub-Ian the looting has not been so heavy and many of the horses thought to have been taken have returned." President Romney ami other church officers have arranged for an Interview Inter-view with General Huerta in Juarez Friday to ask the general to drive the rebels out of the Chihuahua colonies.
