SIMONS TO BE HELD IN JAIL James Simons, self-accused "burglar", "burg-lar", ocuplen a cell at the city Jail and will continue to do so for tho next 30 days as a reward for giving himself up to the local pollco in an effort to earu free transportation to New York City. Simons practically admitted his "stall" when arraigned In the police court this morning on a vagrancv charge. Judgo J. D. Murphy Mur-phy gave him 30 days. The officers declare that It was tho old threadbare game which a few , years ago was good for a free ticket to most any parfof the country Now the police officials require something more than a stranger's unsupported word before he Is shipped to Borne, distant city to stand trial for his alleged al-leged crimes. Simons, who Is a Russian, drifted into the police headquarters laBt Wednesday Wed-nesday and told the desk sergeant that he was wanted in New York for a score of burglaries. He furnished furn-ished what seemed to be detailed information in-formation and said that his raids on the residence districts of the big city netted him about $1,300 In diamonds, dia-monds, Jewelry and other valuables. This booty he collected and took to Liverpool, England, where ho disposed dis-posed of IL Later ho returned to this country and, having exhausted hla capital, desired to return to New York even If It did mean a torm In Sing Sing. Detective Leight, of the New York police department, has been in Salt Lake on official business the past few days and this officer was informed inform-ed of Simons' confession. Ho telegraphed tele-graphed to Now York and word was received that thero had been no such robberies committed, Simons was, therefore, branded as a fakir Intent on earning a pass back to Harlem. Simons entered a plea of not guilty when arralpied on a "vng" charge this morning and when placed on tho witness stand he still declared that he was a regular crook, a second-story second-story man. In reply to questions from Judge Murphy, Simons acknowledged that he didn't know a great deal about cracking a safe and had never UBed nitro-glycerlnc. his criminal operations op-erations being confined to basement windows and porch-climbing.
