Show I MEN AT THE SHOPS I TO BE PROTECTED H Weber Club or Some Other Organization of Business Men May In-1 H vestigute Rumors of Slugging of Strikebreakers Assurance - H Given That Men Within the Stockade Shall Be Safe- H guarded and Rowydisrn, Shall T3e Suppressed. H Complaints fir ibelng mado that H strikebreakers dare noc leavo the roll- M road stockade to trado with the busl- M ness houses of Ogden owing to the M practice of slugging employee by un- M 'i known persons, supposed to be Btxlk- H era or their sympathizers. This pa- H " per has investigated several reports M j of slugging and, -with ono exception, H I has failed to find any ono willing to H make h direct accusation reflecting H ( on the local strikora. i This morning one of the strikers H admitted that there had been note of M ' vlolonco committed 'by "boomers," H ' , hut ho denied that any homo strikers M had been mixed up in attacks on the fl ( men employed in tho stockade. Tho fl local union has deprecated all rowdy- H lsni and tho leaders have Impressed H en the men that tho strike -cannot H ' bo won or tho cause of tho strikers H J in any degreo benefited by assaults H I on strikebreakers. Hi I If this paper Is roll ably informed, H ' there will bo no more disorders and H the men within tho stockade will be H as safe from harm on tho streets of H Ogdcn as they aro while at work. Hj Mayor Glasmann, when seen In. re- H gard to tho foregoing, said: H i "The Wober club is the buslnbss- H men's association of1 Ogden; we H might say it is tho 'Merchants' iin- H Ion,' and I cannot see why tho iner- H chants, through their Kctail Mer- H cants' association, or through the H "Weber chib, have not taken action H before this, and I cannot see why H they do not take action even now. Of H ' course, if the three hundred men ' H working at the Southern Pacific H , shops are afraid to come out and H trade in Ogden and the railroad cora- H pany gives them free transportation H i to run down to Salt Lake City to Hl trade, naturally Salt Lake City rc- H coives the benefit of tho trade. H j "I would suggest that tho Retail H Merchants' association or the Weber H rlub, or both, appoint a committee to H Investigate present conditions, and I H would be pleased to join them, visit H the men at the shops and, if it Is H i found to be fear that causes tho men H to go to Salt Lake to trade. I would H cheerfully furnish them with police H protection of their shopping tours. The H I city will further put special detec- H ( tives at work to learn who Is Intlm- M Sdating strlko-breakors. H "I am confident that no local strlk- H crs aro Interfering with the men at H I he shops. There aro, however, H some visiting strikers from Pocatol- H lo and other points, who may havq H ' taken advantago of the present situ- H nlion to do Injury. H "The city is ablo to give proper H protection to the men working at the H shops and the city will do so." . "I am awfully sornr Wolgast is so bad off, and disappointed bocause the fight will have to be called off." Welsh, however, went out on the road this morning as usual for a workout work-out and expressed the intention of coming Into tho city this morning to see If a match for tomorrow could bo arranged for him. Bvery effort will be made to provide a card so that the gate receipts will not have to be returnod. oo |
