Show H DUTY OF A NEWSPAPER. H ij The Salt Lake Herald-Republican, answering the real estate H men of Salt fljake, who object to the publicity of unsavory happen- H ings in that city, says: H "The righteous newspaper owes a duty to itself, its subscribers Hl and the public. The power of the press, the real engine of publicity, H removes degrading evils which are either ignored by the law or by H those whose sworn, duty it is to enforce the law. It is the duty of H '.j the newspaper to uproot those evils, if possible; at least it is its duty H to try. Correction of such conditions is a better boost for a city than H j the supine policy which ignores the conditions, thus permitting them H ' to flourish -without hindrance. When the evils that need reform have H , been changed into conditions of which a city can be proud, and a H city has nothing in that regard to conceal, then it can be boosted H ' honestly, effectively and successfully." H Men may differ as to how to cure an evil, but the consensus of Hj . opinion is that the one essential to a better condition is newspaper H publicity. Unless the people are informed of the misconduct of pub- H j lie servants, they cannot impartially pass judgment. No false mod- H osty should deter a newspaper in performing this duty to the public. m i |
