Show LOSS WOULD HAVE BUILT THE RESERVOIR. The crops of Weber county arc withering under a drought that is doing great damage. The farmers, so far this season have suffered suf-fered a loss that would have built the greater part of tho storage reservoir in South Fork canyon. There is now flowing in Ogden river, including the water in t(he Utah Light L Railway company's power line and the flow of the irrigation ditches, less than 50 second feet of water, -while the appropriations along the stream call for oyer 700 second feet. This is a most impressive and yet expensive lesson for the farmers ofthis district. They have been warned repeatedly that the wet cycle could not continue and that thcrQ would come dry years They were advised and urged by all the power of persuasion that this paper could command, to earnestly join in the movement to build a great storage reservoir on the South Fork. This failuro to heed a warning has cost them dearly and has given agriculture in this county a setback. When will thoy open their eyes lo the advantages ad-vantages of a storage "reservoir on the Ogden river? The people of Ogden have shown a willingness lo subscribe for half the stock in the reservoir. The city of Ogden has joined in the movement in order to increase and protect thy city's water supply, sup-ply, and yet Ogden is to receive less benefits than any of the interested inter-ested parties. The water stored for Ogden would again return to the stream in only slightly decreased volume, to add to tho flow of the available irrigating stream. The farmers, in self-protection and as a form of crop insurance, should not be slow to avail themselves of the assistance tendered by the people of Ogden They should wcloomo the offer and hasten to do their part, as tho construction of the reservoir means more to them than to any other part of tho communit-. The water commissioner states the flow of water in Ogden river riv-er ,s 50 second feet, which is only sufficient to meet the demands of the Mound Fort and Lynne ditches, and farmers, not on these ca-nals. ca-nals. if U,cy are obtaining any water, arc doing so bv reason of the generosity of the earlier appropriators. j |
