In a game that was always In doubt, the Occidentals" Occi-dentals" won from Murray, Sunday afternoon at Walker's field beforo .i crowd of 3000 people by a score of S td 7, Murray took an early lead, but the negroes overcame this and with the aid of a batting rally and several sev-eral errors on the part of Murray, nosed out the state league, champions of last ycur. ' Harry Good, center field for the Murray team, was largely responsible respon-sible for the loss of the gaino. He dropped three flics and let a grounder ground-er pass through him. In addition to these four errors, Good almost deserves de-serves to have ono chalked up against hjm for fnlllpB to run under a fly which drppped a fow feet from him. All those mlsplays wore costly and resulted In runs for the Oxles. Wlth- out these mlsplays Murray surely would have won. For Murray, Price pitched a good game, allowing only one hit the first five Innings. Ho was hit rather freely free-ly the next three Innings, but perfect play would have cuttdown the effectiveness effect-iveness of these hits. Longford pitched the first three Innings for the Oxles and was hit freely, especially especial-ly in the third Inning. Mooney finished fin-ished tho game and kept the hits scattered. scat-tered. Wllley, an Occidental recruit, played In the field for the negroes the last part of the game, and fielded like a veteran. Fortler, for Murray, looks Hko tho best catcher In the state league. He worked well behind the bat and proved himself a star baBO runner. He beat aut a bunt to first I once, and on another occasion beat out a pretty bunt which, however, rolled foul. Out of five times up he got two hits, a sacrifice hit and a base on balls. His base on balls came when there were two men on bases, and was a deliberate gift by Mooney, who threw four balls high in the air, taking no chances on the possibility of Fortler getting a long hlL Fortler stole second twice on Langley. on |
