Show Farmers Urged to Plan for More Grain Storage More granaries and grain bins on the farm! That is the only solution to 1942 grain storage problems, pro-blems, according to Orville L. Lee of Paradise, Cache county -wheat grower and dairyman, and member of the Utah State AAA Committee. Commit-tee. "Enough storage on each farm to take care of one year's crop," is Mr. Lee's advice. To encourage more farm storage, the Commodity Credit Corporation will make a 7-cent advance at the time farm-stored wheat is put under un-der loan this summer and falL While very few steel bins are avail- able', lumber and nails can still be obtained. The recent order of the War Production Board permits the construction of granaries up to $1000 without any special priorities or certification. Procedure to obtain ob-tain permission for granaries costing cost-ing more than $1000 will be available avail-able for larger granaries, Mr. Lee said. "Wheat growers will start harvest har-vest this year with about 630 million mil-lion bushels of old wheat filling up most of the terminal storage," Lee pointed out. A year ago, the United Unit-ed States carry-over of old wheat was 385 million bushels. The figure set a record up to that time, but in 1942, with an additional 250 million bushels on hand,-the committeeman com-mitteeman believes that the nations na-tions huge grain storage warehouses will be able to handle little of the new crop. A recent survey in Utah indicated indicat-ed that there is enough storage space in the state for the 1942 crop, but southern Idaho depends normally on terminal storage at Ogden for a good share of the crop from this area. This means additional storage will be neeaed. While lumber is now available, farmers were advised by Mr. Lee not to wait until just before harvest har-vest as shortages of transportation may result in shortages of avail-' avail-' able lumber. Nails can be obtained now but no one seems to know how long they will be available. Remodeling old structure not now in use was advised by Mr. Lee. This will not require as much new material and very satisfactory storage can often be made by remodeling re-modeling old buildings. Those who wish to put wheat under Commodity Credit Loan should consult their county AAA committee and learn the regulations regula-tions covering storage. |
