Show The Cholera. The Department of State at Washington Washing-ton Is in receipt of official reports of the alarming spread of cholera from Asia to Europe. Some days since the vice-Consul General at Teheran, Persia, reported that the deaths daily reached the large number of -400 persons, He states that 600 cases are being treated by the American Amer-ican Mission hospital and made a strong appeal for funds from the United States, tha government having no funds for such purposes, made this appeal to the public. Watson R. Sperry, the newly-appointed newly-appointed minister to Pearls, tendered the services of his piper, the Willmlng-ton Willmlng-ton Morning News, to secure such funds Secretary of State Foster gladly consented con-sented to the arrangement and gave Mr. Sperry copies of the correspondence regarding re-garding the epidemic Following the report from Teheran comes information of the same alarming ' character from Europe. United States Consul Johnson at Hamburg reports that he Is advised officially by the government health officer offi-cer of that city of the presence of Asiatic cholera there, and' he accordingly refused re-fused to Issue bills of health to departing depart-ing vessels. Consnl Williams at Havre reports an epidemic of Asiatic cholera at that place with many deaths, and advises ad-vises Inspection of the fast liner "La Tourain." The facts have been promptly communicated to the health officers at Staten Island and every precaution will be taken In the matter, especially in view of the fact that the epidemic has reached the most important ports In Europe with the United States has direct di-rect and rapid -communication. Although Al-though there is no real fear that the cholera will reach the shores of the United States, expressed by the authorities authori-ties of the Treasury Department, thay are taking all precautions deemed neces sary to prevent its introduction. |
