Show MINES TAXED THREE TIMES PROCEEDS HOUSE APPROVES THE SENATE MEASURE TAXING PROCEEDS OF MINES. Board of Equalization Has No Discretion Discre-tion in Case it Concludes That Basis is too High, According to New Bill. Salt Lake City. Eliminating the clause which permitted the state board' j of equalization to determine a just basis upon which to tax the net proceeds pro-ceeds of mines, the lower house of the state legislature on February 2S passed the Bevan-Parker senate bill on mine taxation. Under the present status of the hill, the tax rate on mine proceeds would be on a flat basis of three times the pet proceeds and would give the board of equalization no discretion dis-cretion in case it concluded that this basis was too high, when other taxes were taken under consideration. Failing in an effort to secure an amendment to Senator Bern's bill extending ex-tending the terms of office of state land commissioners and raising their salaries, which would reduce the number num-ber of commissioners from "five to three, Senator Olson of Salt Lake put through an amendment on February 2S, raising the salary of each commissioner commis-sioner from $100 a month to $:500 a year, with the requirement that all of them devote their entire time to land board work. The entire morning session of the house on February 28 was devoted to further wrangling on house bill No. 14, providing for "a state director of health education. The measure finally passed just before the house recessed-tor recessed-tor the noon hour. It secured a bare constitutional majority, the vote hav-ng hav-ng been 24 to 21 in favor of its passage. |
