Show WEED CONTROL PROGRAM PLEASES STATE OFFICIALS Beaver County Commissioners and George L. Hobson, state weed supervisor, were highly pleased with results of the county noxious weed control program following a tour of infested areas recently. Mr. Hobson said results secured from use of the new chemical 2, 4D, were as good as any he had seen in the state. He complimented the weed supervisor, Henry Hall, on the thoroughness thor-oughness of his work. Infested areas at Beaver, Miners-ville Miners-ville and Milford were visited by the group. 'Exceptionally good results re-sults were observed on whitetop in each section. Satisfactory kills were also secured on morning glory, altho results were not as uniformly good as on whitetop. The selective nature of 2, 4-D was demonstrated in a wheat field at Minersville where a small patch of morning glory was sprayed. The chemical had no effect on the grain but did an excellent job of killing the morning glory. Because of this selecitve quality of 2, 4-D, weed eradciation can be conducted with it while a crop of grain or corn is being produced. Areas in Milford town infested with puncture vine were also visited. vis-ited. This is a very harmful weed because of the hard, spiny burr it I produces. The weed is only an annual, but its seeds live for many years in the soil and continue to produce new plants as long as any are left Milford is conducting a vigorous control campaign to destroy de-stroy this and other weeds in the town. One small patch of puncture punc-ture vine was discovered at Minersville Min-ersville during the tour. In addition to the county commissioners com-missioners and Mr. Hobson, others who participated in the tour were Mayor Thompson of Beaver, County Coun-ty Agent Hyrum Steffen and the county weed supervisor, Henry Hail. |
