Show SIGHTSEEING IN MIAMI , I.KAII FOF.KSTEIi nr u-nvols brought us to Lake ,,. ,,s on Sunday afternoon, and he high si'ot of olir trip' th0 .'fni Mountain Lake Sanctu-:;;"lnd Sanctu-:;;"lnd Sinking Tower. We .,. . J there just 10 minutes before hT carillon recital. On this day we heard a memorial recital "For all those who gave their lives in service for Freedom." There were hundreds of people on the grounds surrounding the magnificent tower of grey and pink marble, with its beautiful panels and pinnacles. ' The Sinking Tower bells consisted consist-ed of 71 bells. It seemed that the music co: ling from the tower was a mighty chant voiced by giant gods. We heard the "Tolling of the Bourdon Bell" (a 23,000-pound bell) in memory of the boys who Save their lives "over there." After the recital,, we walked i'iout the grounds to see this beautiful beau-tiful retreat for birds and many kinds of exotic plants and foliage and flowering trees. As we came closer to the Singing Tower we could see in detail the white frieze in a relief of birds and fabled characters encircling the tower. We thought the Sun Dial, with its great golden serpent casting its time-telling shadow was an interesting inter-esting feature of the tower. It was with reluctance we left this Place that carries the message of Edward W. Bok to the people of America, "Make you the world a bit better or more beautiful because be-cause you have lived in it." From the Bok Tower we traveled just 12 miles and we were at the famous Cypress Gardens. This place, with its beautiful fiesta of flowers on every pathway and a'onr the pretty lagoons that led out to the lake where the big cyrpess trees were growing, was a wonderland of color and fragrance. The azaleas in shades of rose pink and red were flowering brilliantly everywhere. We thought the Bird of Paradise one of the most beau-Mful beau-Mful in the Cypress Gardens. It had the appearance of a bird perched among the big leaves of the plant, a striking coloration of blue-purple, rose and gold. Wandering Wan-dering about the gardens were pretty girls dressed in gorgeous gowns of the old-fashioned Southern South-ern Belle. These girls were, of ccurse, a decided attraction of the ardens. We took the boat ride through the lagoons and into the lake "vc.'nd the cypress trees before 'caving the colorful tropical garden. |
