He quickened his steps, and, catching 'him up, hit him a hearty thump on the back. The other turned round, and, to Jones' horror, presented the face of., a complete stranger. "I beg your pardon!" he exclaimed. "I thought you were a friend of mine, Smith by name." The stranger recovered his breath, and answered with considerable con-siderable heat: "And suppose I was Smith, do you have to hit me so hard?" But Jones was ready for this.
