Show o Youngsters Are Doing Big Work Los Angeles, California, April 13, 1936 We constantly become more convinced of the importance of the work being done by juniors in the livestock industry. This makes the oldsters sit up nd take notice. AH modern and scientific phases of breeding, feeding and management are given full attention atten-tion by these boys and girls. This is proved by the results obtained with their splendid cattle, sheep and hogs at the fairs and livestock shows. Competition in the production of prize winning livestock is becomng keener, and each year finds the juniors walking home with more purple ribbons. These boys and girls are being trained in scientific scienti-fic and practical methods. In showing their fine animals, they take into consideration three vital points conformation, type and finish and they apply themselves to the task of acquiring and maintaining main-taining these in their stock. It is the duty of all of us who are connected con-nected with the livestock industry to encourage to the fullest extent these efforts on the part of the 4-H and Future Farmers as well as other organizations of their type. Those of the livestock world who have striven to make these junior activities possible deserve credit for their patience and preseverance in making these organizations successful. suc-cessful. It is the foresight of those who sponsor this Junior work that builds for the future. The work is an unselfish one and the encouragement of individual enterprises for boys and girls is one of the items that raises the standards of the livestock business in general. These youngsters learn to do by doing and they apply every effort toward better livestock production. Competition in the show-ring makes this all the more evident. When one sees these boys and i girls in their livestock work, a feel- J ing of confidence in the citizenry of the years to come is felt, and we ! know the future of the livestock industry will fall into capable hands that this industry will always al-ways hold an enviable place among other industries of the land. Agriculture is the basic industry of the world and livestock is basic in agriculture. In the schools and clubs, boys and girls are taught to realize the importance of this profession pro-fession for it is a profession in every true sense of the word and i it is encouraging to see the pride I the juniors take in raising and fit-! fit-! ting good livestock for the show ring and market. Project work in livestock among boys and girls serve a three-fold purpose. First, it places a nw and continued interest in the hands ofj the youngster and encourages tho doing of something useful. Second, it Imil U character and a sense of responsibility whi.'h is bound to stand the boy or girl in good stead after attaining maturity and entering enter-ing the business or professional : world. Third, it has increased and encouraged a wide interest in the impiovenunt of livestock through the u;e of purebred sires and scientific feeding methods, which in itself, is a notable accomplishment. |
