The local field has ibeen utilized foi emergency stops - at numerous times in the pasb when weather conditions nearer Salt Lake prevented1 pre-vented1 "them from continuing. It- was . a key base of operations in : 1934 . 'when the air mail was handled by the army, under presidential presi-dential decree, and it is the expectation expec-tation . of many far-signted local people that it is .only a matter ol a comparatively short time before Milford will be made a ctenllirai pick-up base for all - southern Utah air mail. . The special mail plane which- 1. picking up southern Utah air mait Thursday, May 19, will' arrive in Milford, east-bound, at 2:50 p.m and depart ait; 3:10, This allows a 20-minUite stop at the local landing field and this time will be taken up with a ten-minute band program, . five-minutes devolted tc talks by L.. A. Wynaught, president presi-dent of the Milford itown board and Postmaster J. C. Root, and the remainder of the .time devoted to a response by the pilott, Clinton Seal, or others joining , in the flight, 'It is urged thajt as many business houses as possible close for' a: half-hour Thursday afternoon after-noon and ' that ' Milford people turn out en masse at the air port for this occasion, -which is likely to be an important one in Milford history. The more Milford people make use ol air mail facilities the' sooner the hopes of local people along the lines named will be realized. The special cachet with which local air mail will be marked 'he week of May 15-21 carries an outline out-line of the state of Utah with Mil-ford's Mil-ford's locaition prominently spotted spot-ted and a modern multi-powered plane headed therefor. At the side of the design are the words "Utah's Best Air Base", and ai the bottom the wtord "Milford" in large type. It is possible that a modification of this cachet will be worked oulfc for permanent use by the local postoffice in connection with the regular cancelling stamp. Postimaslter Rioot reports that dozens of letters are being received receiv-ed by him from collectors all over the country who are anxious to have as souvenirs covers from the local office bearing the mark of this special cachet, and Milforq people may well take their example ex-ample to heart and have theii own souvenirs. |
