Show VICTORYJUEATRE Comedy and mystery, twin elements ele-ments of entertainment, are deftly blended in "Murder in the Private Car," new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer feature which is one of another big twin bill for the Victory theatre fans Friday and Saturday of this week. Featuring Charlie Ruggles, Mary Carlisle, Una Merkel, Russell Hardie and other notables, "Murder in the Private Car" tells a laughable story of sinister menaces that peril a young heiress. Ruggles plays a comedy de-flector of crime. The picture pic-ture is hailed as one of the best of the current show season. "Mandalay," starring Kay Francis, Fran-cis, is the other offering on the big bill for Friday and Saturday. "Mandalay" "Man-dalay" is as thrilling a story of romance ro-mance and wild adventure among the soldiers of fortune, gun runners and resort keepers of the far East as one could wish to see. It is set in the colorful and picturesque background back-ground of Kipling's Burma, "where there ain't no Ten Commondments and a man can raise a thirst." Warner War-ner Oland, soldier of fortune and keeper of the notorious resort, gives a smooth portrayal of cool calculating calculat-ing villainy. In the supporting cast there is a long list of fine character artists which includes such well-known well-known names as Ruth Donnelly, Reginald Owen, Hobart Cavanaugh, David Torrence, Rafaela Ottiano, Etienne Girardot, Lucien Littlefield, Bodil Rosing and Herman Bing. All give excellent accounts of the parts i they portray. "Baby, Take a Bow," coming to the Victory Sunday, Monday and Tues- ; day, introduces five-year-old Shirley i Temple in her first title role. After : her overnight sucess in "Stand Up j and Cheer!" little Shirley has be- j come one of the outstanding person- ; alities on the screen. She has an im- : portant part in the picture and is : responsible for much of the comedy. : James Dunn and Claire Trevor, who j have teamed in three pictures, are together again as Shirley's parents. : It's a sparkling comedy-drama that : gets under way in the first few j scenes and maintains a rapid tempo j to the exciting finish. The story deals with the struggle for happiness and success of a young man just out of prison, a girl who marries him : because she believes in him, and the : result of their union, an adorable j baby girl who is the pride and joy of ther hearts. A great deal of com- edy and human interest has been in- i jected into the scenes showing the i camaraderie and affection between : daddy and baby and the episode of : the child's birthday party affords : Shirley another opportunity to show : her talents as a singing and dancing entertainer. Keen romantic interest is maintained also by James Dunn : and Claire Trevor. j "The Girl from Missouri," the : Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer picture that j shows at the Victory Wednesday and j Thursday of next week as a special of specials, brings Jean Harlow back : to the screen after an absence of : eight months. In her new starring : vehicle, the popular Miss Harlow essays ' one of her most amusing ; characterizations, that of Eadie : Chapman, a girl who embarks upon : a social-climbing career because she : is determined to get financial secur- : ity and position along with her mar- riage ring. The picture flits with j lightning rapidity from swanky j penthouses of New York's ragged j skyline to the pleasure palaces of : Florida and back again. Lionel Bar- j rymore, dean of stage and screen, j shares honors with Miss Harlow in ; the role of the exceedingly wealthy j T. R. Paige, a national political pow- j er. It is the second time that Miss : Harlow and Barrymore have played ; together. Franchot Tone, too, makes jj his second appearance with Miss j Harlow. His first was in "Blond S Bombshell." In "The Girl from S Missouri" he plays the son of Bar- : rymore who falls madly in love with ; Eadie. Additional humor is supplied S by Patsy Kelly, popular New York S stage comedienne who has been fea tured in. eight short comedies and S with Marion Davies in "Going Holly- S wood." The fifth member of the not- 5 xble quintet that leads the cast of : ;he new picture is Lewis Stone, who : ;an always be depended upon for a first class performance. . |
