Show Great Christian Creed The Athanasian creed was one of the three great creeds of Christendom the two others being the Apostles' creed and the Nicene creed. It derives de-rives its name from Athanasius, the opponent of Arius and champion of orthodoxy, by whom It was supposed to have been written. It is the most rigid of three creeds mentioned, and was the standard of orthodoxy during the Middle ages. It Is famous for Its so-called "damnatory clauses." By many it Is thought to have been written writ-ten by Sergeant Hilary of Aries about 450; some argue for a laser dale, between be-tween 700 and S00, while others pronounce pro-nounce it a forgery.
