Show DE WET GUILTY OF TREASON. Leader of South African Revolt May be Sentenced to Death. Bloemfontein, Union of South Africa. General Christian De Wet, one of thjs leaders of the South African Afri-can rebellion against the British government, gov-ernment, was found guilty of treason on eight counts. The law provides for death penalty. General De Wet headed a rebellion in the Orange Free State and Western West-ern Transvaal in October, 1914. He was captured on a farm at Waterburg, British Bechuanaland, to which place he had been pursued by a motor car brigade. General De Wet pleaded not guilty to a charge of high treason, but guilty to a charge of sedition. |
