Show CONSTRUCTION OF HEN HOUSE Fw Practical Suggestion That Will 8 of Much Asslstanc to th Poultry Kepr. (By 3. Q, HAf .PIN and C. A. OCOCK. Wlm-oniln.) For auccea In poultry keeping It is necessary to have a suitable house which will protect the fowl from Inclement In-clement weather and from their natural nat-ural enemies. It must be remembered that from the standpoint of the hen, appearance makes very little difference, but the house must be so built and so arranged ar-ranged that It will be a comfortable place for the hen to live; otherwise they will not thrive and production will not be satisfactory. On many farm tb hen are not provided with a houso constructed especially for them, but are housed In an old building build-ing originally made for some other purpose. Aa a rule this sort of a house I not economical, for, unless it Is constructed especially for bene, It will seldom be found possible to reconstruct re-construct it in such a way as to mnke economical production possible. Poultry house should be located where It la dry and well drained. If the ground la not naturally dry, It should be ditched and drained artificially, artifi-cially, for poultry will not thrive in a house when the floor la constantly wet. Houses should be placed so that they will not be subject to violent winds, yet good air and drainage are essential. A house r.hould never Im placed In a low, damp spot where early fall frost are likely to occur. These places are alwnya cold and unhealthy un-healthy for fowls. One hundred hens will thrive In a iru 20x20 feet, that Is four square feet of floor spa pel" hut one hen will not thrive in a pen 2x2 feet. In a large pen each one ha a chance to wander about over the entire floor space, thua getting more exercise. Generally speaking, it i far cheaper to build a wide house than a narrow one. A house 20x20 Is cbeaix-r than a house 10x40 and contain as much floor apace for the hens. A house 20 feet wide, however, will be found Impracticable for some typ. of roofs and will not be found satisfactory where on wishes to keep a number 3f amall breeding pens. There are several common types of roof used on poultry houses. Just which Btyle of roof should be chosen I largely a matter of personal preference, but the type of roof will be found to Influence the coBt of construction con-struction to quite an extent. Wherever there Is only one poultry houao a partition Is always advisable aa It permit one to keep tho Lena aep- Different Type of Roofs Used In Poultry Houses. 1 I a shed roof, 2 a combination roof, 3 a gabl roof, 4 a eml-monltor roof, 6 a monitor roof, 6 a slanting front roof, and 7 an A-typ A-typ roof. arated from the pullet early In the winter and make It possible later to make up a breeding pen of the beat fowl. In a mull bouse, that Is one not over 80 feet long, one should use board for the partitions for about two feet from the floor. Th rest may be made of wire or cloth except between th roosts of the different pens, where the boards should run to the roof. |
