David Livingstone, explorer and mls-alonary, mls-alonary, waa a man of varied accomplishment, accom-plishment, lleaidea getting himself taught on board ship, and later by Sir Thomas Maclear, to take with great accuracy astronomical observations observa-tions for fixing latitude and longitude, besides acquainting himself with botany bot-any and geology, with patristic literature litera-ture and Egyptology, Livingstone waa an excellent mechanic, a steersman and a mariner. Ills resourcefulness was at all times remarkable. When he waa hard up for fuel on his first steamer Journey up the River Shire he landed In the elephant marsh. Here no trees existed and no fuel was obtainable, ob-tainable, but his men found many bones of slaughtered elephants, Llv-lugstone Llv-lugstone at once took the bonea on board, burned them In the furnaces of the Ma-robert, aud so continued bis Journey. |
